We are a pie family! We both prefer pie over cake, any day. One of the BEST days of the year is March 14th. Pi Day! In this year of 2026, PI DAY is on a SATURDAY! Very convenient. We’ve had many a Pi Day with no pie in sight. I hate it when Pi Day falls on a… Wednesday! So hard to make a pie in the middle of a school/work week!
Pi Day being on a Saturday also, makes it easy to host a Pi Day party! Invite a few friends over and everyone brings a pie to share. Spend a couple casual hours with friends eating pie and visiting. Add some Minute to Win It games or a game of cards if you are into that.

A More Low-Key Option
If inviting people over is too overwhelming, that is OK! You can still celebrate Pi Day! Make yourself a pie for dinner! If you have a partner and/or kids at home it is still really fun to do just do what you can handle. Do just one little thing to acknowledge the day. BECAUSE IT’S FUN! This is how traditions begin. This is how good memories are created. You could order a New York Pizza “Pie” for dinner and tell the kids it’s because of Pi Day and that is SPECIAL and memorable.
One year for Valentine’s Day I set candles on the table, lit them, dimmed the lights and served the plain old dinner that had been planned before I realized that it was Valentine’s Day. This began a new tradition. We had dinner by candlelight for most Valentine’s Days after that. My kids always thought it was fun and special. They talk about it still, as adults.
Pi Day is just another “made up” holiday. Why exert any extra effort? Because… It’s FUN! (I feel like I’ve said that before.) We are in the business of Memory Making!
Savory Pies
Make a Savory Pie for dinner and kill two birds with one stone. Dinner is done and Pi Day is covered. Done!
We’ve got to start with a Colorado original. Spaghetti Pie is a great dinner idea for Pi Day!
St. Patrick’s Day + Pi Day
If you want to celebrate Saint Paddy’s Day and Pi Day out one of these very special pies –
- Irish Dingle Pie hailing from the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry. Used to be made with mutton in a lard crust. You can still make it that way. Nowadays it is often made lamb. We made it with beef in this recipe. And the crust we use is a really good favorite!
2. These Beef Pasties originate in Cornwall, England but are still a huge deal in Ireland. Dingle Pie was often made into hand pies so farmers could take them into the fields for an easy lunch.
Now for Dessert Pie!
Choose your favorite or make a few. We’ve collected our more uncommon pie recipes for you. Which one will you try first?
One of the first pies I go for Pear Custard Pie. This is a classic family favorite of ours. When pears are in season I like to make many of these and go deliver them to friends. I’ve lost count how many people have told that it is the best pie they’ve ever tasted.
Have you ever heard of Arkansas Possum Pie? The creamy layered filling is so good, however it is the nutty crust that does it for me. Maybe it’s those two components together? It just really works for me.
You’ve probably had a Key Lime Pie, but have you tried Atlantic Beach Pie? This one is a fresh, creamy, citrus piece of heaven. It is so different, and so many have not heard of it.
A slab pie is a great idea if you are hosting or attending a Pi Day party. Apple Pie Slices are light, flaky and delicious. This one is a MUST TRY!
Cherry Pie Bars are a twist on my grandma’s award-winning Cherry Pie. The recipe takes some shortcuts, so it is fast and easy to make, while still getting all those cherry pie flavors. IF you are scared of making an actual pie, then this would be a non-stressful one to try.
You’ve heard of banana cream, and lemon cream and chocolate cream, BUT have you heard of Raspberry Cream? Have you tasted a Raspberry Cream Pie? If not, then you need to!
Made in a springform pan, or a pie plate, Banoffee Pie is a British classic mash up of Banana and Toffee. Most Americans have not had a piece or have even heard of it. Impress your friends with this one for sure!
Do you remember fruit pizza of the 80’s and 90’s? I remember it being so popular. It was served at every gathering. WELL, this Fresh Fruit Pie is based off of the old classic fruit pizza recipe. Different, fun, adaptable, light, fresh and delicious are all good reasons to try this one.
A few years ago, mom developed this recipe and brought it to Thanksgiving. Maple Cream Pie with Sugared Almonds is now one of my TOP Favorite pies AND I do NOT even like Maple!!! What is up with that? That is how good this is! It will convince non maple lovers to like maple, after a lifetime of hating it.
I know, I KNOW! Banana Cream Pie is one of the most common and basic pies in America. Here’s the thing, Last weekend we went to a friend’s house for pie after an evening meeting. Her husband LOVES banana cream pie and he had driven 40 MINUTES to a new bakery to get a banana cream pie. It was just… OK. I felt bad for him. He said it has been years since he has had a banana cream pie. IF that is the case for you as well, then please try this one. It is grandma’s recipe (therefore, Frontier Pies recipe) Maybe you will like it. Or love it!
So apple pie was never my favorite… until I had this one made by a friend. This classic apple pie is a little bougie because it is an Apple Pie with a Butter Pastry Top and that top crust is enough to push it up and over the edge for me. SO. GOOD.
This recipe makes 2 regular pies or 8 mini pies. We love these Mini Pie Plates and use them all the time for pies, flan, panna cotta and serving desserts.
If you want to try something that is super “1960’s housewife” than try this Millionaire Pie. Make your own graham cracker crust of buy a premade one. This one tastes better than it looks.
This is another vintage one that makes me think of my grandmother every time. Taking a bite of Rhubarb Custard Pie is like taking a bite of my childhood. I have won awards with this pie at bake offs. The flavor and texture is just so great! If you can get your hands on some rhubarb in March, then try this one!
This Cherry Cheese Pie is an oldie, but a goodie. You may have had this one. Maybe your mom or grandma used to make it. My mom’s friend made it for Thanksgiving my senior year of high school and that was the first time I had it. It is a fast and easy pie good in a graham cracker or pastry crust. Someone might bring a cherry pie to your Pi party, but this one is more unlikely to show up.
S’Mores Pie is uncommon, different and delicious! Your friends and family will love this one! The thick and creamy fudge filling in a graham cracker crust and topped with toasted marshmallows is something I love and I do not even like s’mores!
For something light and fresh, try out this Summer Berry Pie As soon as the berries are looking fresh and good, I am making this pie. This would be a great addition to any pie night.
This one is truly old fashioned, and we just do not hear enough about Buttermilk Pie these days. It has been around for a very long time but nowadays is not the most common pie in America. It will unlikely be brought by another friend. We love the texture and flavor of this pie!
Saved the best for last! There’s gotta be at least one chocolate pie on the table and this one is THE BEST! Chocolate Chess Pie is a favorite around here. Sometimes I make it just because. For no reason at all. It is SO yummy! We see Chess Pie often, but hardly ever see CHOCOLATE Chess Pie. And in my opinion, this is the BEST Chocolate Pie that exists.
So, which one looks like YOUR pie? Leave a comment and let us know which ones you tried out!
